Traction When It Counts: PTO Shafts for Driven Axle Trailers

The Dutch harvest often happens when the polders are at their wettest. Pulling a 20-ton trailer load of sugar beets or potatoes out of a muddy field is a challenge even for the biggest tractors. Wheel slip damages soil structure and wastes fuel. The solution? Powered Axle Trailers (Aangedreven Kippers).

By connecting the tractor’s Ground Speed PTO (Rijafhankelijke aftakas) to the trailer’s axle, you synchronize the pushing power of the trailer with the pulling power of the tractor. But this driveline faces extreme stress. It must handle the full torque of the tractor engine multiplied by the low gearing required for field work. It must also articulate to extreme angles as the tractor turns and the trailer follows.

At EVER-POWER, we engineer the “T-Drive” Series specifically for this heavy haulage application. We combine massive torque capacity with wide-angle flexibility to ensure you never get stuck with a full load.

🚛 Transport Specialist Report: The Mud Rescue

Ubicación: Beet Harvest, Noordoostpolder
Equipo: 3-Axle Driven Tipper

“A contractor called me. He had snapped the main drive shaft on his powered trailer while trying to exit a particularly boggy headland. The trailer wheels had sunk deep, and when he engaged the drive, the resistance was too great for the standard shaft.

The failure was in the tube profile. The torque had twisted the triangular tube like a corkscrew.

La solución: We upgraded the driveline to a Splined Solid Shaft design. Splined shafts handle significantly higher torque loads than hollow tubes. We also installed a Cam Clutch set to 3000 Nm. The next time the trailer bogged down, the clutch disengaged with a loud ‘bang’, warning the driver to stop and get a tow assist, saving the expensive axle gears.”

Technical Superiority: Engineered for Heavy Haulage

Driven trailers require a driveline that is more “truck” than “tractor.”

1. Wide-Angle Agility

Trailers articulate. When you turn into a field gate, the angle between the tractor and trailer can hit 90 degrees. A standard U-joint shaft will destroy itself instantly if power is applied. We use 80° Constant Velocity (CV) Joints. This allows you to keep the drive engaged even during tight maneuvers, maintaining momentum in the mud.

2. Ground Speed Synchronization

The trailer wheels must turn at the same ground speed as the tractor wheels. This requires precise gearing. Our shafts are built with Estrías sin juego to ensure there is no lag in the drive take-up. Any “slop” in the driveline causes the trailer to push or pull against the tractor, leading to tire wear and transmission wind-up.

Client Success Story: The Forestry Forwarder

Cliente: Forestry Contractor, Veluwe
Desafío: Extracting timber with a driven trailer. The rough terrain caused the trailer chassis to twist, putting immense strain on the PTO shaft bearings. Standard shafts failed every month.

Solución EVER-POWER: Suministramos un “Double-Cardan” Shaft with extended telescopic travel. The extra travel allowed the shaft to absorb the chassis flex without bottoming out. We also used High-Angle Yokes that permit greater articulation over stumps and ditches.

Resultado: Shaft life extended to over a year. The contractor can now access deeper parts of the forest without fear of driveline failure.

Regional Relevance: Soil Compaction & Traction

Dutch farmers are acutely aware of soil compaction (bodemverdichting). A powered trailer allows the tractor to work with less wheel slip, preserving the soil structure.

To support this, our shafts are designed for Low-Friction Telescoping. Even under full torque load, the shaft must be able to slide in and out as the trailer moves over bumps. If it locks up (thrust load), it can damage the tractor’s PTO bearings. We use specialized coatings and profile geometries to ensure “glide” under load.

The Drive Hub: Gearboxes for Powered Trailers

El eje de la toma de fuerza proporciona la potencia, pero la Caja de cambios distributes it to the wheels. In a powered trailer, the gearbox acts as a transfer case and differential.

EVER-POWER fabrica productos especializados Drive Gearboxes designed for trailer applications:

1. Transfer Gearboxes (The Splitter)

Mounts on the trailer drawbar.

  • Disconnect Function: Allows the operator to disengage the drive to the wheels for road transport (high speed).
  • Ratio Matching: Custom gear ratios to match the trailer wheel speed perfectly to the tractor’s ground speed PTO ratio.

2. Differential Axle Drives

The axle center section.

  • Locking Diff: Integrated differential locks for maximum traction in mud.
  • Heavy Load: Reinforced housings to support the weight of a 20-ton load.

3. Input Gearboxes for Pumps

For hydraulic drive trailers.

  • Pump Mount: Directly mounts high-pressure hydraulic pumps to drive hydraulic wheel motors (a popular alternative to mechanical drive).

Sinergia del sistema: Mismatched ratios between tractor and trailer will destroy the driveline. Always verify your gear ratios before connecting a powered trailer. Sourcing the shaft and gearbox components from EVER-POWER ensures expert advice on ratio matching.

Preguntas frecuentes

My trailer pushes the tractor downhill. Is this dangerous?

Yes, extremely. This is “back-driving.” If you don’t have an Embrague de rueda libre in the driveline, the heavy trailer load pushes the tractor engine, potentially causing a jack-knife. Always ensure your shaft has a freewheel capability.

Can I use a standard 540 PTO shaft for ground speed drive?

No. Ground speed PTO shafts must be rated for the variable speeds and high torque of traction work. Standard shafts are designed for constant 540 RPM implement loads. You need a Heavy-Duty Traction Shaft with reinforced splines.

Do you deliver to Zeeland?

Yes. We deliver to all agricultural regions in the Netherlands, including Zeeland, where heavy clay soils make powered trailers essential. We offer fast shipping to minimize downtime during harvest.

How do I measure the correct length for a trailer shaft?

Measure the distance from tractor to trailer input when turning at the tightest possible angle (shortest distance) and when driving through a dip (longest distance). The shaft must accommodate both extremes without bottoming out or separating. We can custom-build extended travel shafts.
