In the dense Pulp & Paper clusters of the Netherlands, such as **Eerbeek**, **Renkum**, and **Maastricht**, the Drum Debarker is the first critical step in the fiber line. This massive rotating cylinder, often exceeding 5 meters in diameter, operates on a principle of chaotic tumbling. As logs crash against each other and the drum shell to strip away bark, the drive system experiences erratic, high-amplitude shock loads.

The mechanical stress is compounded by the environment. Woodyards are exposed to the elements, and the debarking process often involves water (wet debarking) or generates fine, acidic wood dust. Standard drive shafts typically fail at the cross bearings due to seal ingress or spline fatigue caused by the constant micro-vibrations transmitted from the drum’s “stick-slip” motion. Downtime here halts the entire pulp mill, a scenario unacceptable in the highly efficient Dutch process industry.

The Ever-Power “Forest-Guard” Solution

Ever-Power has engineered the Forest-Guard™ Series to neutralize these threats. Our shafts utilize a “Damping-Core” yoke design forged from 42CrMo4 alloy steel, which provides the necessary ductility to absorb impact energy without cracking. Crucially, we employ a **Cassette Sealing System** on the universal joints. This multi-lip seal is specifically designed to exclude wet bark fibers and pressurized water, protecting the lubricant integrity.

For the support of the heavy rubber-tire drive stations or pinion drives, our shafts feature increased torsional stiffness to prevent “wind-up” during the high-torque startup phase. Compliance with **NEN-EN 13001** ensures that our components meet the rigorous safety standards required by the Dutch Inspectorate SZW, guaranteeing safe operation even under overload conditions.

Damping the “Drum Bounce” in Wet Debarking

Standard seals fail quickly in wet debarking. We recommend upgrading to Ever-Power shafts with our **Cassette Sealing System**, which provides a triple-lip barrier. Additionally, specifying a C5-M Marine grade epoxy paint finish will protect the shaft tube from corrosion caused by acidic wood tannins.

Shock loads can snap standard yokes. We use 42CrMo4 forged steel for our yokes and case-harden our cross-bearing trunnions to 60 HRC. This combination allows the shaft to absorb the “peak energy” of tumbling logs without brittle fracture or surface indentation (brinelling).
