This massive rotating cylinder, often exceeding 5 meters in diameter, operates on a principle of chaotic tumbling. As logs crash against each other and the drum shell to strip away bark, the drive system experiences erratic, high-amplitude shock loads.

The mechanical stress is compounded by the environment. Woodyards are exposed to the elements, and the debarking process often involves water (wet debarking) or generates fine, acidic wood dust. Standard drive shafts typically fail at the cross bearings due to seal ingress or spline fatigue caused by the constant micro-vibrations transmitted from the drum’s “stick-slip” motion. Downtime here halts the entire pulp mill, a scenario unacceptable in the highly efficient Dutch process industry.

A drum debarker drive is only as reliable as its weakest link. The transmission of power from the electric motor to the drum often involves a high-reduction gearbox. The connection between this gearbox and the drive pinion (or rubber tire) is critical. Damping the “Drum Bounce” in Wet Debarking

El desafío: A prominent recycled paper mill in Eerbeek was experiencing severe vibration issues on their Wet Drum Debarker. The uneven loading of logs caused the drum to “bounce,” transmitting shock waves back through the drive shaft, destroying the gearbox input seals every 4 months.
