When the “Morning Mix” Becomes a Repair Job

It’s 5:30 AM in a dairy barn in Friesland. The temperature is near freezing. You’ve just loaded 6 tons of wet grass silage (kuilgras) and 2 tons of maize into your vertical mixer. You engage the PTO. BANG. The shear bolt snaps. Again. Now, instead of feeding 150 hungry cows, you are climbing under the drawbar with a hammer and a flashlight, trying to drift out a broken bolt.

This is the reality for many dairy farmers using undersized or generic PTO shafts. TMR (Total Mixed Ration) mixers are arguably the most abusive application for a tractor driveline. The “breakaway torque”—the force needed to get those vertical augers moving against the resistance of compacted, wet silage—is massive. It can be 3 to 4 times the operating torque.

At Ever-Power, we understand that in the Netherlands, where feed density is high and barn geometries are tight, a standard “Category 4” shaft simply isn’t enough. You need a driveline engineered for High Inertia Startup En Acute Turning Angles.

Field Log: The “Frozen Monday” in Leeuwarden
“Last winter, I visited a farm near Leeuwarden running a 24m³ twin-auger mixer. The farmer was furious. He was snapping shear bolts every single Monday morning. Why Monday? Because on Sunday, he would load the wagon for the next morning to save time. The wet silage would settle and freeze slightly overnight, locking the augers solid. When he engaged the PTO at 540 RPM, the shock load was instantaneous. The bolt didn’t stand a chance. We swapped his shaft for a Series 8 with an Automatic Cam Clutch. Now, if it freezes, the clutch ‘rattles’ (slips) for 3 seconds, breaking the ice bond gently, then engages fully. No more broken bolts. No more cold fingers.”

The Dutch Context: Why “Kuilgras” Changes Everything

Farming in the Netherlands is intensive. The feed ration typically contains a high percentage of grass silage (kuilgras), which is wetter and denser than the dry hay mixes used in North America or Southern Europe. This density creates a “suction” effect on the mixer augers.

The Geometry Challenge: Narrow Barns

Many Dutch farms, especially in the traditional dairy regions of Overijssel and Utrecht, operate in barns built 20 or 30 years ago. The feed alleys are narrow. To turn into the alley, the tractor often has to jackknife at nearly 90 degrees.
If you try this with a standard PTO shaft, you get “chatter”—violent vibration caused by the non-constant velocity of the U-joint. This chatter destroys the mixer’s planetary gearbox seals. That is why, for the Dutch market, we almost exclusively recommend 80° Wide Angle (CV) Shafts aan de tractorzijde.

Arbo Safety Compliance

The Dutch Labour Inspectorate (Inspectie SZW) is strict about rotating machinery. TMR mixers are high-risk zones. Our shafts feature:

  • Full Cone Guards: Covering the entire CV joint assembly.
  • Steel Anchor Chains: To prevent the guard from spinning (a common failure point on cheap shafts).
  • Easy-Grease Access: Encouraging regular maintenance without removing safety shields.

Case Study: The “24-Ton” Solution in Heerenveen

Cliënt: A large dairy cooperative utilizing a self-propelled mixer and several tractor-pulled backup units.

Uitdaging: Their backup 30m³ triple-auger wagon was destroying PTO cross kits every 300 hours. The wagon was pulled by a 300HP tractor. The torque was simply too high for the “Heavy Duty” shaft supplied by the dealer.

De Ever-Power oplossing:

  1. We analyzed the torque curve. The startup spike hit 4800 Nm. The existing shaft was rated for 3000 Nm max.
  2. Wij leverden een op maat gemaakt product. S10 Series Shaft (The ‘Beast’) with a star-profile tube featuring Rilsan coating to reduce telescoping friction under load.
  3. We hebben een installatie geplaatst Wrijvingskoppeling on the implement side, set precisely to 4200 Nm to protect the gearbox but allow startup slip.

Resultaat: The new shaft has run for 1,500 hours with zero failures. The Rilsan coating also allowed the shaft to telescope smoothly even when the wagon was fully loaded and turning, protecting the tractor’s PTO bearing.

Interchangeability & Compatibility

Whether you run a Trioliet, Schuitemaker, Peecon, or Strautmann mixer, our shafts are designed to fit. We use global standard connection profiles.

We offer direct dimensional replacements for:

  • Walterscheid (W-serie): Direct fit for W2500 and W2600 CV wide-angle shafts.
  • Comer Industries: Compatible with V-Series and T-Series heavy-duty lines.
  • Bondioli & Pavesi: Matching SFT series torque and profile specs.

The Power Behind the Mix: Agricultural Gearboxes for TMR Wagons

While the PTO shaft gets the power to the wagon, the Landbouwversnellingsbak performs the magic of torque multiplication. Vertical TMR mixers require massive torque to turn the augers, usually achieved through a planetary reduction gearbox.

However, before the power reaches the planetary gears, it often goes through a Haakse kegelwieloverbrenging of een 2-Speed Powershift Gearbox at the front of the wagon. This is where Ever-Power comes in.

Heavy-Duty Bevel Gearboxes for Mixers

We manufacture the robust reduction gearboxes that sit on the drawbar. These units are critical because they take the 1000 RPM from the tractor and drop it down, while turning the power 90 degrees to feed the planetary drives.

Our Gearbox Features:

  • 2-Speed Shifting: Many of our gearboxes allow for a high/low gear selection (via cable or hydraulic shift). This lets you use “Low” gear for the heavy breakaway startup, and “High” gear for the cleanout phase, saving diesel.
  • Integrated Hydraulic Pumps: We can provide gearboxes with a through-shaft or a PTO output to drive the wagon’s hydraulic system (for the discharge doors and conveyors).
  • Cooling Fins: TMR mixing is a slow, continuous process that generates heat. Our housings are cast with deep fins to dissipate heat, ensuring seal longevity.

By sourcing the complete drivetrain—PTO Shaft and Input Gearbox—from Ever-Power, you ensure that the spline interfaces are matched perfectly, reducing wear and vibration (“chatter”) throughout the machine.

Veelgestelde vragen

Q. My TMR mixer vibrates heavily when empty. Is this the shaft?

It can be. If the shaft is not “phased” correctly (yokes aligned) or if the telescopic tubes have too much play (wear), an empty wagon will amplify the noise because there is no load to dampen it. Check your tube overlap and U-joint condition. Also, check the CV joint centering disc for wear.

Q. What is the difference between a Shear Bolt and a Friction Clutch?

A shear bolt is a simple fuse—it breaks at a specific load and must be replaced manually. A Friction Clutch (slip clutch) uses spring-loaded plates to slip when overloaded and re-engages automatically. For TMR mixers, clutches are superior because they handle the momentary startup spikes without stopping work, whereas a shear bolt might snap unnecessarily.

Q. Can I use a 540 RPM shaft on a 1000 RPM mixer input?

No! Running a 540-rated shaft at 1000 RPM is dangerous. The vibration forces quadruple, and the guard bearings may overheat and melt. Always match the shaft rating to the tractor output. We supply high-speed balanced shafts specifically for 1000 RPM mixing.

Q. Do you ship to the northern dairy provinces (Friesland/Groningen)?

Yes, we ship daily to all Dutch provinces. We understand that cows need to eat every day, so we offer expedited shipping for replacement shafts to minimize downtime.
