PTOシャフトは、トラクターから接続された機器へ動力を伝達するトラクターの部品です。耕うん機や草刈り機を使用する場合、PTOシャフトは重要です。トラクターと機器の両方にとって、適切なPTOシャフトのサイズを選ぶことが非常に重要です。PTOシャフトのサイズが機器に合っていない場合、正常に動作しない可能性があります。

シールド

IIDシャフトガード

トラクターのPTOシャフトには必ずIIDシャフトガードを取り付けてください。定期的に点検・回転させて点検する必要があります。また、PTOシャフト周辺で作業する際は、トラクターのエンジンを停止しておくことも重要です。駆動系部品を保護するためにドローバーを使用することも重要です。これにより、駆動系への負荷を軽減し、分離の可能性を低減できます。
オーバーランニングクラッチ
PTOシャフトに取り付けられたオーバーランニングクラッチは、PTOシャフトを一方向に自由に回転させながら、トラクターの後ろに牽引される作業機の回転速度を制限する機構です。このクラッチは、減速時に作業機の回転速度がトラクターの回転速度を超えるのを防ぐのにも役立ちます。オーバーランニングクラッチには、時計回り用と反時計回り用の2つの基本的な構成があります。
オーバーランクラッチのもう一つのタイプは、PTO駆動のブッシュホッグを備えたトラクターで使用されます。ブッシュホッグにはフライホイールとブレードがあり、PTOシャフトを介してトランスミッションを駆動します。オーバーランクラッチがないと、トラクターの走行中にこれらの作業機が空転し、シャフトが破損する可能性があります。
PTOオーバーランニングクラッチは、動力がトランスミッション（後輪に動力を伝える部分）に逆流するのを防ぎます。オーバーランニングクラッチがないと、トラクターに動力が逆流し、ブレードアセンブリが物体に衝突した場合に事故を引き起こす可能性があります。そのため、トラクターの安全性を確保するには、オーバーランニングクラッチを使用することが不可欠です。
回転方向
その名称とは裏腹に、PTOシャフトの回転方向は必要に応じて変更できます。ほとんどのPTOは一方向回転ですが、リバースPTOアダプターを取り付けることで回転方向を反転できる場合が多くあります。ただし、リバースPTOは絶対に必要な場合にのみ使用してください。
国際標準化機構（ISO）は、PTOの回転方向の標準を定めています。PTOに取り付けられた作業機が不適切な回転によって損傷する可能性があるため、この標準を遵守することが必要です。この標準は、農家が作業機の破損などの問題を回避するのに役立ちます。PTOシャフトの回転方向はすべてのPTOで同じとは限りませんが、両方向に回転できるトラクターもあれば、回転方向の制限がないトラクターもあります。
