In the Netherlands, the Telehandler (Verreiker) is the Swiss Army Knife of the farm and construction site. You use it to stack bales, load feed mixers, and clear mud with a sweeper. But when you attach a PTO-driven implement—like a sweeper brush, a straw blower, or a silage defacer—you introduce a geometry nightmare.

Unlike a tractor, where the PTO stub and the 3-point hitch move together, a telehandler’s geometry is dynamic. The PTO output is often fixed to the chassis (or a remote hydraulic motor), while the implement moves with the boom. As you crowd (tilt) the bucket or lift the boom, the distance and angle change rapidly.

The “Bottoming Out” Risk:
Standard agricultural shafts are often too long. When you crowd the attachment fully back, a standard shaft will “bottom out” (compress fully), transferring tons of hydraulic force directly into the PTO gearbox bearings, shattering them instantly.

Field Log: The “Exploding” Sweeper in Tilburg
“I visited a construction site near Tilburg. They were using a telehandler with a PTO-driven sweeper bucket to clean the road. Every time the operator curled the bucket back to dump the debris, there was a loud bang. The PTO shaft was bottoming out. The force was pushing the hydraulic motor off its mount! They were using a standard 800mm tractor shaft. I measured the gap: at full curl, it was only 650mm. We supplied a custom ‘Short-Series’ CV Shaft that collapses to 580mm. No more banging. The hydraulic motor stayed put.”

The Dutch Context: “De Alleskunner” (The All-Rounder)

In the Netherlands, space is tight, and efficiency is king. A telehandler is often expected to be a loader in the morning, a sweeper at noon, and a straw blower in the evening. This rapid changing of attachments puts huge stress on the PTO connection.

The “Hydraulic PTO” Factor:
Many telehandlers don’t have a mechanical PTO from the engine; they use a high-flow hydraulic motor to drive a PTO stub. Hydraulic motors have instant torque—zero ramp-up. This “hydraulic hammer” effect can snap standard cross kits.

Case Study: The Silage Defacer in Overijssel

The operator has to lift the boom high to reach the top of the clamp. The steep angle at the top was causing their standard shaft to vibrate violently, cracking the defacer frame.

  2. We installed a Series 6 Wide Angle (CV) Shaft. The CV joint cancels the velocity fluctuation.
  3. We used a Star Profile Tube to handle the high torque required to cut the compacted silage.

Q. How do I measure the correct PTO length for my telehandler?

This is critical. You must find the “shortest distance” position. Mount the attachment. Crowd (curl) the attachment back fully and retract the boom fully. Measure the distance between the PTO stub on the machine and the gearbox input. Subtract 50-75mm for safety clearance. This is your maximum compressed length.

Q. Can I use a PTO shaft if my telehandler only has hydraulic lines?

Not directly. You need a hydraulic motor (orbital or piston) mounted on the attachment or the carriage. We supply hydraulic motors with a PTO spline output (1 3/8″ Z6) so you can connect a standard PTO shaft to drive the implement. This is a common conversion in the Netherlands.
