It often is. Fans run at high speeds, so even a small imbalance in the PTO shaft is amplified. If your shaft has a worn U-joint or a bent tube, it will destroy the fan bearings. We recommend our “Precision Balanced” series for fan drives, which are dynamically balanced to eliminate this vibration.
We strongly advise against it. Cotton harvesting involves high continuous loads and heat. A standard agricultural shaft is designed for intermittent use. Our Cotton Series uses special high-temp grease and hardened bearing cups designed specifically for the thermal loads of continuous harvesting.
Most cotton pickers use a 1-3/4″ Z=20 spline on the tractor side for high horsepower transfer. However, specific header drives may vary.
