• 1. The Profile Match: Look at your existing shaft. Is it a star? Count the points. You cannot shove a triangle inner tube into a star outer tube. It sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised. If you are replacing the whole unit, the Star Tube is a great upgrade for reliability.
• 2. The Cut: When you shorten a shaft, you must cut the steel tubes AND the plastic safety shields by the exact same length. If you cut the steel but not the plastic, the guard will bottom out and shatter the first time you lift the hitch.
• 3. The Burrs: This is the big one. After cutting a Star Tube, you have multiple edges to file down. If you leave a metal burr, it will gouge the mating tube and seize the shaft. Spend the extra five minutes with a file.
