When Mechanical Noise Blinds Your Cameras

It sounds like a contradiction: using a brute-force tractor PTO to power delicate, high-tech optical color sorters. But in the Netherlands, where mobile processing is a massive industry—from cleaning imported tea in port facilities to sorting seed potatoes in the field—this setup is standard. You mount a diesel generator and a high-capacity optical sorter (like a Satake or Buhler unit) on a trailer, drive it to the crop, and plug it into the tractor.

Here is the problem most fabricators miss: Harmonics.

I’ve been called out to sort lines in North Brabant, where the operator swore the camera software was buggy. The reject rates on the rice sorting line were erratic. The culprit? It wasn’t the software. It was a cheap, standard-tillage PTO shaft driving the main generator. The “whip” from the shaft was sending a 50Hz vibration right through the trailer chassis and shaking the CCD cameras by a fraction of a millimeter. In optical sorting, that’s the difference between a clean batch and a rejected load.

At Ever-Power, we don’t just sell you a spinning stick. We engineer driveline stability. For optical sorting applications (whether tea, rice, or high-value seeds), we utilize cold-drawn profiling and dynamic balancing far exceeding standard agricultural norms.

Technical Data: Precision Series (Optics-Ready)

We generated these parameters based on the specific needs of mobile processing units that utilize PTO-driven generators (20-80kVA) and mechanical intake systems. These aren’t your standard muck-spreader shafts.

Field Report: The “Ghost” in the Machine
“Last October, I was visiting a client near Emmeloord. They process imported specialty rice and tea blends using a mobile unit docked in a warehouse. They were using a premium optical sorter, but getting 5% false rejects. They blamed the rice dust. I looked at their drivetrain. They were running a standard agricultural PTO shaft to the 60kVA generator. I put a vibration sensor on the generator frame: 12mm/s RMS. Way too high. We swapped it for our G6.3 Balanced Shaft with a Star-Profile tube. Vibration dropped to 2.5mm/s. The false reject rate dropped to 0.2% instantly. It wasn’t the dust; it was the shaft shaking the camera focus.”

Dutch Market Context: Why “Good Enough” Fails Here

In the Netherlands, agricultural contracting (loony business) is highly competitive. Equipment needs to be versatile. A mobile sorting unit might be handling tea imports in Rotterdam one week and sorting flower bulbs in Lisse the next.

The Regulatory Landscape (Arbo & Safety)

The Dutch Inspectorate SZW (Arbeidsinspectie) is strict. A spinning PTO shaft on a stationary processing unit is a major hazard zone because workers are often standing right next to it, adjusting bagging lines.

Our Compliance features:

  • Full Enclosure Guards: Our yellow safety shields cover the entire universal joint, meeting EN 12965 standards.
  • Cadenas antirrotación: We use reinforced steel chains, not plastic clips, ensuring the guard stays stationary even in cold Dutch winters.
  • Calcomanías: ISO-compliant safety pictograms that are understandable regardless of the operator’s language.

Interchangeability & Sizing

We understand your mobile unit might have been built in Italy, Germany, or locally in Holland. You need parts that fit. Our shafts are designed to be dimensional replacements for major global standards.

If your maintenance manual specifies:

  • Walterscheid W-Series: We offer direct cross-compatibility for W2300/W2400 sizes.
  • Comer T-Series: Our T40/T50 equivalents feature identical cross-kit dimensions.
  • GKN / Bondioli: We match the SFT profiles for high-end applications.

Complete the Drivetrain: Specialized Gearboxes for Sorting Lines

The PTO shaft is the bridge, but the Caja de cambios agrícola is the heart of your mechanical distribution. In a mobile tea or rice sorting unit, the PTO usually drives a large gearbox that splits power: one output for the electrical generator (for the cameras) and another for the hydraulic pump or mechanical elevators.

At Ever-Power, we manufacture the gearboxes that match our shafts. For optical sorting applications, we recommend our “Quiet-Run” Bevel Gearboxes.

Why Gearbox Noise Matters in Optical Sorting

Gear backlash (the play between teeth) creates high-frequency vibration. If your gearbox is “chattering,” that noise travels up the conveyor belt frame. In tea sorting, this can cause the tea leaves to bounce on the belt, disrupting the laminar flow needed for the cameras to spot stalks or foreign material.

Our Gearbox Specifications:

  • Pulido de precisión: Our spiral bevel gears are lapped in pairs to ensure >95% contact area. This results in a silky smooth power transfer.
  • Gestión térmica: Aluminum alloy housings (on select models) dissipate heat faster, essential when the unit is running inside a warm warehouse or container.
  • Relaciones personalizadas: We can provide speed-increasing gearboxes (e.g., 1:3 ratio) to step up 540 PTO RPM to the speed required for generators or fan blowers.
  • Caza de focas: Double-lip Viton seals prevent oil contamination, even in dusty rice hulling environments.

By sourcing the PTO shaft and Gearbox as a matched set, you eliminate “tolerance stacking”—ensuring the input spline of the gearbox fits the output yoke of the shaft perfectly tight.

Preguntas frecuentes

My sorting machine is stationary. Why do I need a Wide Angle (CV) PTO shaft?

Even if the machine is stationary, the alignment between the tractor and the trailer is rarely perfect. If you have a misalignment of more than 5 degrees, a standard shaft creates velocity fluctuations (speeding up and slowing down twice per rotation). This fluctuation creates vibration. A CV shaft cancels this out, providing smooth “electric-like” power to your generator.

How do I measure the correct PTO length for a mobile rice processor?

Measure the distance from the tractor output shaft groove to the implement input shaft groove when they are closest together (usually when turning tight). Subtract 75mm from this measurement to determine the maximum closed length of your PTO shaft. This prevents the shaft from bottoming out and crushing your gearbox bearings.

What is the lead time for shipping to Zeeland or Groningen?

For standard profiles (T-Series or W-Series equivalents), we can ship via express logistics partners to anywhere in the Netherlands within 3-5 business days. Custom bore sizes may take slightly longer.

Can you customize the shaft for a specific Japanese tea sorter input?

Yes. Many Japanese machines (like older Satake models) use specific keyed shafts or JIS splines. We have a full CNC workshop and can machine yokes to fit non-standard inputs perfectly.
