Engineering resilience for the recycling heart of the paper industry. Specialized universal joint shafts designed to withstand the extreme shock loads, moisture, and chemical exposure of modern pulping lines.
Core Engineering Insight: The Pulper Drivetrain Challenge
In the aggressive environment of Dutch paper recycling mills—from the cardboard producers in Eerbeek to the graphical paper plants in Limburg—the hydraulic pulper represents the primary point of failure for mechanical transmission. The drive shaft connecting the high-power electric motor and the helical gearbox (or directly to the rotor shaft in some configurations) must endure a unique stress profile. Unlike constant-load applications, a pulper experiences violent, irregular shock loads as bales of waste paper, often contaminated with wire or plastic, impact the rotor.
Furthermore, the operating environment involves 100% humidity, splashing pulp slurry, and exposure to de-inking chemicals and bleaching agents. Standard industrial cardan shafts frequently succumb to spline corrosion and seal failure in these conditions. EVER-POWER has engineered a specialized solution: the SWC-P Pulp & Paper Series. These shafts feature an augmented Service Factor (K > 2.5), triple-lip labyrinth sealing systems, and specialized epoxy surface treatments to resist the corrosive atmosphere, ensuring continuous operation in 24/7 production cycles.

Technical Analysis: Drive Shafts in Vertical & D-Type Pulpers
The Vertical Installation Challenge
Many high-consistency pulpers utilize a vertical drive arrangement where the motor sits above or below the pulper tub, connected via a gearbox. In vertical installations, gravity works against standard lubrication retention. Conventional seals can allow grease to migrate away from the upper spline section, leading to “dry telescoping” and eventual seizure. When a spline seizes in a pulper, the vibration transmission from the rotor to the gearbox becomes direct and destructive.
EVER-POWER addresses this with a dedicated Vertical-Mount Lubrication System. Our shafts feature internal grease reservoirs and positive-pressure seals that defy gravity, ensuring the spline interface remains lubricated. Furthermore, we utilize Rilsan® coating on the male splines, reducing the friction coefficient significantly. This ensures that even during high-torque startup, the shaft can telescope freely to accommodate thermal expansion of the gearbox housing without transmitting axial thrust loads.
Corrosion and Chemical Resistance
The atmosphere around a pulper is laden with moisture and chemical vapors. Standard carbon steel shafts rust rapidly, making maintenance disassembly nearly impossible. Our solution for the Dutch market includes a comprehensive corrosion protection package. The flanges and yokes undergo a specialized Zinc-Nickel plating process or are finished with a high-build marine-grade epoxy paint system (C5-M certified).
For the universal joints, we employ a “Purgeable” seal design. This allows maintenance teams to pump fresh grease into the bearing cup, forcing old, potentially contaminated grease and moisture out through the seal lip. This positive purge capability is essential for flushing out contaminants that inevitably accumulate in a waste paper processing environment.
