When the “Morning Mix” Becomes a Repair Job

It’s 5:30 AM in a dairy barn in Friesland. The temperature is near freezing. You’ve just loaded 6 tons of wet grass silage (kuilgras) and 2 tons of maize into your vertical mixer. You engage the PTO. BANG. The shear bolt snaps. Again. Now, instead of feeding 150 hungry cows, you are climbing under the drawbar with a hammer and a flashlight, trying to drift out a broken bolt.

This is the reality for many dairy farmers using undersized or generic PTO shafts. TMR (Total Mixed Ration) mixers are arguably the most abusive application for a tractor driveline. The “breakaway torque”—the force needed to get those vertical augers moving against the resistance of compacted, wet silage—is massive. It can be 3 to 4 times the operating torque.

At Ever-Power, we understand that in the Netherlands, where feed density is high and barn geometries are tight, a standard “Category 4” shaft simply isn’t enough. You need a driveline engineered for High Inertia Startup Và Acute Turning Angles.

Technical Specifications: The “Silage-Master” Series

We generated these parameters specifically for the 12m³ to 30m³ feed wagons commonly used by Dutch contractors and large dairy farms.

Field Log: The “Frozen Monday” in Leeuwarden

“Last winter, I visited a farm near Leeuwarden running a 24m³ twin-auger mixer. The farmer was furious. He was snapping shear bolts every single Monday morning. Why Monday? Because on Sunday, he would load the wagon for the next morning to save time. The wet silage would settle and freeze slightly overnight, locking the augers solid. When he engaged the PTO at 540 RPM, the shock load was instantaneous. The bolt didn’t stand a chance. We swapped his shaft for a Series 8 with an Automatic Cam Clutch. Now, if it freezes, the clutch ‘rattles’ (slips) for 3 seconds, breaking the ice bond gently, then engages fully. No more broken bolts. No more cold fingers.”

The Dutch Context: Why “Kuilgras” Changes Everything

Farming in the Netherlands is intensive. The feed ration typically contains a high percentage of grass silage (kuilgras), which is wetter and denser than the dry hay mixes used in North America or Southern Europe. This density creates a “suction” effect on the mixer augers.

The Geometry Challenge: Narrow Barns

Many Dutch farms, especially in the traditional dairy regions of Overijssel and Utrecht, operate in barns built 20 or 30 years ago. The feed alleys are narrow. To turn into the alley, the tractor often has to jackknife at nearly 90 degrees.

If you try this with a standard PTO shaft, you get “chatter”—violent vibration caused by the non-constant velocity of the U-joint. This chatter destroys the mixer’s planetary gearbox seals. That is why, for the Dutch market, we almost exclusively recommend 80° Wide Angle (CV) Shafts on the tractor side.

Arbo Safety Compliance

The Dutch Labour Inspectorate (Inspectie SZW) is strict about rotating machinery. TMR mixers are high-risk zones. Our shafts feature:
