In the Netherlands, water management is life. Maintaining the thousands of kilometers of ditches (sloten) and canal banks is a massive industrial operation. Whether you are a contract worker (loonwerker) mowing steep embankments in South Holland or trimming hedges in the Achterhoek, your equipment takes a beating. The load on a flail mower (klepelmaaier) is not constant; it is violent.

I have spent 18 years diagnosing driveline failures in forestry and landscaping machinery. The most common killer of PTO shafts in this sector isn’t rust—it’s torsional shock. Hitting a hidden tree stump or a discarded tire in tall grass sends a massive shockwave back through the driveline. If your shaft isn’t engineered to handle that spike, it snaps. Period.

At EVER-POWER, we engineer Series 6 and Series 8 Heavy-Duty PTO Shafts specifically for the grueling demands of Dutch roadside maintenance. We combine Wide-Angle (CV) Technology for extreme articulation with Embreagens de roda livre to manage the immense inertia of high-speed flail rotors.

From the Engineer’s Notebook:

“I remember a call from a municipality contractor near Utrecht. They were using a heavy-duty side-arm flail mower to clear highway verges. They were breaking a PTO cross kit every two weeks. The operator admitted that to save time, he was mowing around signposts without lifting the mower head, creating sharp 60-degree angles on the driveline.

The standard shaft just couldn’t take the geometry. We upgraded them to our Series 8 Double Wide-Angle (CV-CV) Shaft. This allowed the shaft to run smoothly even at extreme angles. We also added a Embreagem de fricção set to 1500 Nm to slip when they hit the inevitable hidden concrete blocks. They went from bi-weekly repairs to zero failures for the rest of the season.”

Optimized for Dutch Landscape Management

Maintaining the Dutch infrastructure requires specialized machinery. From the dykes of Zeeland to the forests of Veluwe, equipment must be versatile. The Verge Mower (Klepelmaaier) is the workhorse here.

1. The “Offset” Challenge

Verge mowers often operate fully offset to the side of the tractor to mow ditches. This geometry requires the PTO shaft to extend significantly while transmitting high power. Our Star Profile Tubes offer a superior contact area compared to lemon tubes, preventing the tubes from twisting or seizing under the heavy torque load of a 2.5-meter flail head.

2. Safety & “Arbo” Compliance

Roadside maintenance happens in public spaces. Flying debris is a risk, but so is the rotating shaft. Our shafts feature Reinforced Safety Guards that withstand the impact of branches and debris. The guard cones are designed with “Easy-Access” ports, encouraging daily greasing without removing the guard—a key factor in passing VCA safety audits.

Compatibility with Major Mower Brands

We supply replacement drivelines for the heavy-hitters in the Dutch landscaping sector. Whether you operate a Herder arm mower, a Votex flail, a Perfect (Van Wamel) orchard mower, or a Kuhn landscape tool, we have the fitment.

Our shafts are dimensionally and functionally interchangeable with:

  • Walterscheid (GKN): W-Series (W2400, W2500) replacements.
  • Indústrias Comer: T-Series (T60, T80) replacements.
  • Bondioli e Pavesi: SFT S6 & S8 replacements.

Case Study: Forestry Mulching in Gelderland

O desafio: A forestry contractor in the Veluwe was using a heavy-duty mulcher to clear undergrowth. The rotor often hit hardwood stumps. The standard slip clutch was slipping too much, glazing the discs and losing torque capacity, eventually causing the rotor to stall in heavy brush.

O diagnóstico: The standard 2-plate friction clutch provided with the machine was undersized for the shock loads of forestry work. It couldn’t dissipate the heat generated by frequent slipping.

A solução: We upgraded them to a Series 8 Shaft with a 4-Plate Heavy Duty Friction Clutch. We also upgraded the friction linings to a high-performance sintered material (bronze/ceramic mix).

O resultado: The 4-plate design doubled the surface area for heat dissipation. The clutch held firm in heavy brush but still released cleanly when hitting a solid stump. The contractor reported a 30% increase in daily throughput because they didn’t have to stop to let the clutch cool down.

Spare Parts & Customization

When a roadside mower is down, traffic management costs pile up. We stock critical spares for rapid delivery:

  • Overrun Clutch Hubs: Replacement pawls and springs.
  • Wide Angle Repair Kits: Center balls and double yokes.
  • Friction Discs: Standard organic and sintered linings.
  • Profile Tubes: Heavy-wall Star profiles for maximum strength.

The Muscle of the Machine: Agricultural Gearboxes for Flail Mowers

While the PTO shaft gets the power to the mower, the Caixa de Engrenagens Agrícolas is the component that turns that power 90 degrees and accelerates it to the incredible speeds required for flailing. The rotor of a flail mower typically spins at 2000+ RPM. This means the gearbox is a “Speed Multiplier,” taking the 540 RPM input and stepping it up by a ratio of 1:3 or 1:4.

At EVER-POWER, we manufacture the heavy-duty gearboxes that pair perfectly with our PTO shafts. We understand that in mowing applications, the gearbox must be a tank—capable of withstanding heat, vibration, and impact.

Specific Gearbox Applications for Flails

1. High-Speed Multipliers

The main gearbox on a flail mower lives a hard life. It must transmit high horsepower while multiplying speed. This generates significant heat.

O desafio: Thermal breakdown. If the oil gets too hot, it thins out, and the gears scour.

A solução: Our Flail Mower Gearboxes feature Oversized Oil Reservoirs and Cooling Fins cast directly into the HT250 Iron housing. We use high-speed tapered roller bearings that can handle the thermal expansion without seizing.

2. Integrated Overrun Clutches

Many modern mower gearboxes have the Overrunning Clutch (Freewheel) integrated dentro the gearbox input shaft, rather than on the PTO shaft. This keeps the clutch lubricated in oil, greatly extending its life compared to external dry clutches.

The EVER-POWER Advantage: We offer gearboxes with internal freewheels. This simplifies the PTO shaft requirement (allowing you to use a standard shaft) and provides a smoother rundown for the rotor.

3. The “Impact” Factor

When a flail hammer hits a rock, the shock transmits instantly to the bevel gears.

A solução: Nós usamos Spiral Bevel Gears that are carburized and case-hardened. The spiral tooth design ensures that multiple teeth are in mesh at any given time, distributing the shock load across a larger surface area. This makes the gearbox virtually immune to sudden tooth breakage from impact.

Seamless Integration

We machine our gearbox input shafts to match our PTO yokes perfectly (1 3/8″ Z6). This ensures a tight fit that eliminates vibration. We offer standard ratios (1:3, 1:4) and can customize mounting patterns to fit brands like Maschio, Kuhn, or Nobili.

Perguntas frequentes

How do I know if my Overrunning Clutch is working?

With the tractor engine OFF and the PTO disengaged, turn the PTO shaft by hand in the driving direction. It should lock and turn the mower rotor. Then turn it in the opposite direction. It should click and spin freely without turning the rotor. If it locks in both directions, it is seized and dangerous.

Can I use a shear bolt instead of a slip clutch?

For heavy flail mowers, we do não recommend shear bolts. The inertia of the rotor can shear the bolt just by engaging the PTO too quickly (“feathering” the clutch). A shear bolt also offers zero protection during spin-down. A Friction Clutch combined with an Overrun Clutch is the only safe option.

Do you ship to the Netherlands?

Yes. We have efficient logistics partners serving the Benelux region. We can ship spare parts or complete shafts to logistics hubs in Rotterdam or directly to your farm or workshop address.

How often should I check the friction clutch?

You should “slip” the clutch at the start of every season. Loosen the springs, engage the PTO to let it slip for 2-3 seconds to polish off rust, and then retighten the springs to the specified length. This ensures it hasn’t rusted solid over winter.
