When the Ditch Bank Angle Breaks Your Driveline

It’s late September, the last cut of the season before the rains hit Noord-Brabant. You are running a heavy-duty side-arm flail mower (klepelmaaier) to clear the ditch banks (“slootkanten”). You swing the mower out to reach the far side of the ditch. The angle is steep—maybe 40 degrees. Suddenly, a terrible vibration shakes the entire cab. Your coffee spills. The gearbox seal blows.

This is the “Non-Constant Velocity” curse. Most standard PTO shafts cannot handle the geometry of modern offset mowers. When you angle a standard U-joint beyond 25 degrees, it speeds up and slows down twice per revolution. At 1000 RPM, this creates a hammer effect that destroys inputs.

At Ever-Power, we don’t sell generic shafts for mowers. We sell Driveline Geometry Solutions. For the Dutch contracting market (Loonwerk), where every meter of grass verge counts, we specify 80° Wide Angle (CV) Joints coupled with 클러치 오버러닝 to handle the massive inertia of the flail rotor.

Field Log: The “Vibrating” Veenendaal Contractor

“I visited a municipal contractor in Veenendaal last summer. They were mowing highway verges with a new 2.5m flail mower. The operator complained that his hands were numb from the vibration in the steering wheel. I checked the PTO. They had saved money by using a standard shaft, not a CV. The mower was offset by 1.5 meters, creating a 32-degree angle on the joints. I measured the vibration: 18mm/s RMS. Dangerous. We swapped it for a Series 6 CV Shaft. Vibration dropped to 3mm/s immediately. The gearbox temperature dropped by 20°C. Never skimp on geometry.”

The Dutch Context: “Bermbeheer” (Verge Management)

The Netherlands has one of the densest road networks in the world, and every road has a grass verge (“berm”) and a ditch (“sloot”). Maintaining these requires specific machinery: side-arm flail mowers.

The “Inertia” Danger:

A flail mower rotor is a massive flywheel. Spinning at 2000 RPM (at the rotor), it holds huge kinetic energy. When you disengage the PTO to stop for a traffic light or a turn, that energy has to go somewhere. Without an Overrunning Clutch (Vrijloopkoppeling), the momentum travels back up the shaft, through the tractor transmission, and pushes the tractor forward—even if you have the clutch depressed. This has caused accidents where tractors were pushed into ditches.

우리의 해결책: All our mower shafts come with integrated Freewheel options in the yoke.
