Why? Because the vibration dampening characteristics of our “Durable” series shafts are tuned to protect the gearbox seals. A wobbling shaft (often caused by a bent tube or cheap U-joints) acts like a jackhammer on your gearbox input bearings. By maintaining tight tolerances on our telescoping tubes and using high-grade grease in the shield bearings, we ensure that the power flows smoothly. This protects the expensive internals of your gearbox. If you are replacing a shaft because of a failure, check your gearbox input shaft for play. We had a client near Den Helder, let’s call him Bram. He runs a specialized bulb planting operation. The soil there is sandy but gets incredibly abrasive when wet. Bram was running older shafts on his planters, and the sand had worked its way into the shield bearings. The shields seized up. So, what did his operators do? They chained the shields to the tractor so they wouldn’t spin, but the friction was so high it melted the plastic, leaving the spinning steel exposed. Dangerous stuff.<\/p>\n

The Dutch labour inspectorate (Inspectie SZW) paid a visit and, rightly so, shut down two of his machines until they were compliant. That\u2019s downtime you can’t afford in planting season! Bram called us in a panic. We shipped him our Durable series shafts overnight. The difference was the “labyrinth seal” design on our safety shields. If the shaft bottoms out (fully compresses) before the lift arms reach their max height, you will smash your tractor’s PTO stub or crack the transmission casing.
