Smooth-Run PTO Shafts for Harvest Conveyor Systems & Field Logistics
Stable Power for Cabbage, Broccoli & Lettuce Harvest Wagons in the Netherlands
When “Belt Shudder” Bruises Your Bottom Line
Picture this: It’s October in Noord-Holland. You are harvesting 20 hectares of Savoy cabbage. The tractor driver is navigating a muddy headland turn while the harvesting crew on the 12-meter conveyor belt is frantically cutting and loading. Suddenly, the belt jerks. The cabbage heads bump into each other. The hydraulic system whines.
That “jerk” isn’t just annoying; it’s physics biting you back. Most harvest conveyor wagons (Oogstbandwagens) are driven by a PTO-powered hydraulic pump unit mounted on the drawbar. When you use a standard PTO shaft and turn the tractor, the universal joint angle creates a fluctuation in rotational speed. This causes the hydraulic pump to pulse, which makes the conveyor belt speed uneven.
For delicate crops, this is a disaster. Bruised vegetables mean rejection at the auction (Veiling). At Ever-Power, we engineer PTO shafts specifically for these Constant Velocity (CV) applications. We don’t just spin the pump; we stabilize the flow.

Log Entry: The “Broccoli Jam” in Flevoland
“Last November, I visited a contractor harvesting broccoli near Zeewolde. Their harvest wagon’s belt kept stalling every time the tractor corrected its steering. The driver was frustrated; the crew was standing idle. I checked the PTO shaft. It was a standard 2-joint shaft running at a 25-degree angle. The ‘whip’ was causing the hydraulic pressure relief valve to pop open rhythmically. We swapped it for an Ever-Power CV (Constant Velocity) Shaft. The result? Silence. The belt ran smoothly, regardless of where the driver steered. They finished the field 2 hours earlier than planned.”
Dutch Field Logistics: Safety & “Arbo” Compliance
In the Netherlands, agricultural logistics is a high-pressure environment. Workers are often standing on moving platforms (the harvest wagon) just meters away from the rotating PTO shaft. The Dutch Working Conditions Act (Arbowet) is extremely strict about this proximity.
Our Safety Commitments:
- Full Guard Coverage: Our shafts feature extended “safety cones” that cover the entire universal joint, leaving no rotating metal exposed near the hydraulic pump.
- Anti-Rotation Chains: We supply heavy-duty steel chains to anchor the guard. A spinning guard is an immediate fail during an SZW inspection.
- Weather Resistance: Harvest season in NL is wet and cold. Our guards use UV-stabilized HDPE that doesn’t crack in sub-zero morning frosts, ensuring safety all season long.
Case Study: The “Wet Autumn” Savior
Client: A large vegetable grower in West-Friesland (Noord-Holland).
Challenge: Harvesting cauliflower in extremely wet conditions. The mud meant the tractors had to “crab steer” to maintain a straight line. This constant steering created extreme angles for the PTO shaft driving the harvest belt generator. Their existing shafts were wearing out U-joints every 3 weeks due to the angles.
The Ever-Power Solution:
- We analyzed the geometry. The crab steering forced the shaft into a continuous 35-degree working angle.
- We recommended a Series 6 Wide Angle Shaft, typically used for balers, but adapted for their generator.
- We specified an Overrunning Clutch to protect the generator from the tractor’s sudden engine decelerations in the mud.
Outcome: The farm completed the 2024 harvest without a single driveline failure. The belts ran at a constant Hz, improving the quality of the cut.
Universal Compatibility
Whether your harvest wagon is built by a local Dutch fabricator or a major brand, our shafts are designed to fit.
We offer direct dimensional replacements for:
- Walterscheid (W Series): Compatible with W2300 and W2400 CV units.
- Comer Industries: Direct fit for CV-40 and CV-50 series.
- Bondioli & Pavesi: Matching SFT series wide-angle specifications.
The Heart of the System: Agricultural Gearboxes for Harvest Logistics
The PTO shaft delivers the power, but the Gearbox drives the action. On a harvest conveyor wagon, the PTO usually connects to a gearbox that drives a hydraulic pump (or sometimes a mechanical belt drive).
At Ever-Power, we manufacture the dedicated gearboxes that sit at the receiving end of our shafts. For hydraulic pump drives (Group 2 or Group 3 pumps), we recommend our “Step-Up” PTO Gearboxes.
Why “Step-Up” Gearboxes?
Tractor PTOs spin at 540 RPM. However, efficient hydraulic pumps often need to run at 1500-2000 RPM to generate the flow required for multiple conveyor belts. Our step-up gearboxes (typically 1:3 or 1:3.8 ratio) bridge this gap.
Key Features for Dutch Harvest Conditions:
- Cast Iron Durability: We use GGG40 nodular iron housings. In the field, equipment gets bumped. Cast aluminum can crack; iron takes the hit.
- Spline Precision: The female input spline is broached to strict DIN standards to ensure a tight fit with our PTO shafts. A loose spline wears out quickly under the pulsing load of a hydraulic pump.
- Oil Cooling: Running a pump all day generates heat. Our gearboxes are designed with maximized oil capacity to keep the gears cool, preventing oil breakdown during those 14-hour harvest days.
By sourcing both the CV PTO Shaft and the Pump Drive Gearbox from Ever-Power, you guarantee a vibration-free interface. We can even pre-assemble the pump-gearbox-shaft combination for you, saving your workshop hours of assembly time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Look at your drawbar geometry. If the pivot point of the drawbar is located halfway between the tractor U-joint and the implement U-joint, a standard shaft works fine (Equal Angle Rule). However, most harvest wagons have short drawbars. If you turn tighter than 15-20 degrees while the PTO is running, you hear a “knocking” sound. That is the signal you need a CV shaft to prevent pump damage.
Yes. We understand that during harvest, speed is everything. We work with logistics partners who can deliver to specific coordinates or farm addresses across the Netherlands, often within 24-48 hours for standard stock items.
The 1 3/8″ 6-spline is the standard for 540 RPM operation. The 1 3/8″ 21-spline is used for 1000 RPM operation. Never force a 6-spline shaft onto a 21-spline tractor stub or vice versa. Also, ensure your hydraulic pump gearbox is rated for the correct input speed!
Yes, we sell replacement “Easy-Lock” guard kits. However, check the condition of the nylon bearings on the shaft. If the guard broke because the bearings seized, putting a new guard on will just break it again. Clean and grease the bearing grooves before installing the new guard.
