When the “Versnipperaar” Hits Hardwood

You are a contractor (Loonwerker) clearing elm disease (iepenziekte) trees along a provincial road in Gelderland. Your 400HP tractor is powering a massive drum chipper. The feed rollers grab a twisted 40cm oak trunk. The load spikes instantly. A standard agricultural PTO shaft would twist like a pretzel in this moment. But in forestry, downtime isn’t just expensive; it leaves you stranded in the woods.

Forestry applications—specifically Wood Chippers (Houtversnipperaars), Forestry Mulchers (Bosfrezen), and Stump Grinders (Stobbenfrezen)—represent the most abusive environment for a power take-off shaft. The combination of High Inertia (from heavy flywheels) and Violent Shock Loads (hitting stumps/stones) requires a different breed of engineering.

At Ever-Power, we don’t just “up-rate” an agricultural shaft. We build Forestry-Specific Drivelines. We use S45C forged steel, case-hardened cross kits, and specialized friction clutches that can absorb the kinetic energy of a stalled 2-ton rotor without shattering.

Field Log: The “Smoldering” Clutch in Apeldoorn

“Last winter, a client near Apeldoorn was clearing a pine forest for a new development. They were running a PTO-driven stump grinder. The operator called me, saying he smelled smoke. I arrived to find the friction clutch on his standard shaft glowing cherry red. He was burning through a clutch pack every 2 days. The issue? The clutch was undersized for the torque of his new 300HP tractor. We replaced it with our Series 10 ‘Forest-Pro’ Shaft with a 4-Plate Sintered Bronze Clutch. Sintered bronze can handle 3x the heat of standard organic linings. We set the springs to 3500 Nm. The slipping stopped, the smoke cleared, and the stumps disappeared.”

The Dutch Context: “Landschapsbeheer” (Landscape Management)

Forestry in the Netherlands is less about timber harvesting and more about nature management. Organizations like Staatsbosbeheer and Natuurmonumenten require contractors to work with extreme precision in protected areas like the Veluwe or the Loonse en Drunense Duinen.

The “Roadside” Challenge:

Much of the wood chipping happens on roadsides (“bermen”). This means the machine is constantly starting and stopping as the tractor moves between tree piles. Every start-up puts massive stress on the PTO.

We equip our chipper shafts with Heavy-Duty Overrunning Clutches. This allows the heavy chipper flywheel to spin down safely when the tractor stops, preventing the momentum from pushing the tractor into traffic or damaging the transmission brake.

Arbo & Safety

In forestry, a broken PTO shaft is a lethal projectile. The Dutch Arbo regulations are strict.
